On 6 November
2003, Republic Polytechnic announced the tender award
of its Woodlands campus building contract worth S$322
million. This is believed to be one of Singapore's
biggest construction projects in 2003, with the economic
downturn affecting the said industry and driving
down prices for many local and foreign contractors.
A joint venture between China Construction Development
Company and Taisei Corporation, two reputable companies
which are renowned both locally as well as in Japan
and China, the award was given to them as the lowest
bidders in the tender exercise. The ceremony was
held at the Boardroom of The Republic.
Invited to witness the signing ceremony was Mr
Philip Ng, Chairman of The Republic's Development
Committee. Signing on behalf of the polytechnic
was Principal & CEO, Prof Low Teck Seng, whilst
signing on behalf of Chinacon and Taisei were Mr
Chen Guo Cai and Mr Tatsuya Sugawara respectively.
Also present were representatives from PMLink,
the project managers of this tender, the architects,
DP Architects and Maki Associates, structural engineers
Meinhardt (S) Pte Ltd, Beca Carter Hollerings Ferner
as the M&E Engineers and Davis Langdon & Seah
Singapore as the quantity surveyors. Three press
members from The Straits Times, Business Times
as well as LianHe Zaobao were also present to cover
this event.
Starting with an informal introduction to all
present, Prof Low proceeded to give a slideshow
on the future Woodlands campus and how it would
integrate itself with the community, park and surrounding
amenities. Following this was the actual signing
ceremony which saw the three signatories taking
the stage and inking the agreements with hearty
handshakes and smiles all around. This was then
followed by a session of question and answer with
the media as the signatories took turns to answer
questions about campus security, award details
as well as on the construction industry in Singapore.
Even Mr Philip Ng took some time to answer questions
on the general trend in the construction scene.
The event ended after a twenty minute Q&A
session and all invited guests adjourned to the
back of the Boardroom for light refreshments and
more mingling.
