FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ROBOTIC DINOSAURS POINT THE WAY FORWARD AT REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC’S
2004 OPEN HOUSE;
SIGNALLING POLY’S INTENTION TO ADVANCE IN ROBOTICS & ANIMATRONICS FIELD
10 FEBRUARY 2004 – SINGAPORE – Republic Polytechnic has unearthed two 28 feet robotic dinosaurs, which are part of the polytechnic’s inaugural Open House attractions, during 12-14 February 2004. Standing guard at the entrance to the poly, these dinosaurs are on exhibit as part of the School of Engineering’s efforts to highlight The Republic’s initiatives into the robotics and animatronics arena. The School of Engineering is collaborating with a local Engineering company to jumpstart this bold initiative.
The School of Engineering at the Republic Poly is embarking on a long term programme to build up core expertise and capabilities in this specialised and high tech area of robotics and animatronics. The technology that will be developed would include, wireless communication, embedded systems, control theory, microcontrollers, intelligent systems, 3D modeling, servo motors, sensors and hydraulic systems.
Robotics and animatronics will provide great diversity of hands-on activities using RP’s unique PBL approach, which will provide a fun, innovative and educational experience for all engineering students. Projects in robotics and animatronics will be created to enable as many students as possible to participate, and to develop technological skills that would be put to good use when they venture into the industry.
The market for such animatronic models and displays is growing as the demand for animatronics is increasing rapidly especially in the area of entertainment and advertising.
Other programmes to be held during Open House 2004, themed “Free Yourself” also includes live working demonstrations of The Republic’s Problem-Based Learning approach, round-the-clock musical and cultural performances by The Republic’s students, laboratory tours as well as lucky dips and goodie bag giveaways. An installation art in progress is also viewable at the Library.
Free shuttle bus service is available during the entire three day duration at Redhill MRT station. More details on the Open House can be found at http://www.rp.edu.sg/openhouse/index.htm.
