REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC GRADUATES RECEIVE THEIR DIPLOMAS IN GRADUATION ATTIRE

Singapore, 13 March 2007 – The second batch of 928 students from Republic Polytechnic will receive their diplomas this morning at the graduation ceremony held at its state-of-the-art auditorium, The Republic Cultural Centre.  Characteristic of RP’s unique and innovative and dare-to-be-different style, these students will wear for the first time in polytechnic history, specially designed graduation attire and colours.  Another unique feature at the event is the RP Mace whose connotations of academic rigour and integrity will etch the significance of the graduation ceremony forever in the minds of those present.

Inspired by the Olympian torch, the RP Mace can be illuminated with a light source symbolising education’s power to banish the darkness of ignorance.  Every detail of the RP Mace has a meaning: the crystal symbol on the mace represents the polytechnic's commitment to the pursuit of excellence and the modern torch design represents the institution’s commitment to a progressive education system that will prepare our students well for a knowledge-based economy.

Also making its debut at the graduation is the RP gown. Its most distinguishing feature is the hood, which is made into a separate and ornamental article draped over the shoulder and down the back.  The velvet edging on the hood shows the school colour – pink for the School of Applied Science, blue for the School of Engineering and orange for the School of IT.

The following diplomas will be awarded at the graduation ceremony:

LEE KUAN YEW AWARD FOR MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE – Chow Jing Shen, Zachary
