MEDIA RELEASE
The Innovation Show is the one show that showcases innovations by budding young talents. Organised by the Republic Polytechnic (RP), it will feature the best projects undertaken by its students, in collaboration with secondary students. Some of these projects even have commercial value.
A total of 34 projects will be presented – and exhibited – by students at the Civil Service College this Friday 16 Sept 2005.
They include the following:
While mum and dad are sleeping, the child may crawl off the mattress and get hurt. This nightmarish scenario will be banished with the invention of an intelligent mattress which provides a sound or light alert whenever baby is close to veering off the mattress. Giving parents a timely wake-up call.
While playing the piano or violin, musicians often experience the frustration of having to pause, or losing their concentration, as they flip a page in their score sheet. Students have come up with a brilliant idea to engage the musician’s feet instead – so their feet do the scrolling electronically without interrupting the harmony of the performance.
Squeezing toothpaste can be tricky – too much and you end up wasting a good dollop. Now, with a toothpaste dispenser invented by students, a simple turning of the screw cap discharges a precise amount of paste onto the brush.
These are just among the 34 projects on show. The Innovation Show is designed to bring out the creative talents of students, who are nurtured by academic staff and given the opportunity to find expression in discovery and invention.
Professor Low Teck Seng, Principal and CEO of Republic Polytechnic, commended the students for their efforts. He said: “Together, the students go through a journey of understanding what it is like to create, innovate and excite. The imagination knows no boundaries and these students have shown that they have the capacity to absorb knowledge and then express it through discoveries that while not earth shattering are significant enough to be of value and interest to society.”
