Three-Generation Families Engage In Fun, Games And Quizzes In A Display Of Intergenerational Bonding
BOUNCE Carnival @ Republic Polytechnic In Celebration Of National Family Week 2005
Children as young as five and grandparents in their 70s will be among the participants of a unique event aimed at promoting intergenerational bonding and healthy lifestyle.
They comprise members of some three-generation families who will try to outwit, outplay and even outrun each other in Discovery Trail@Republic Polytechnic. This will be the highlight of a family carnival – called BOUNCE Carnival - organised by Republic Polytechnic and Grassroots Organisations (GROs) in Tanglin-Cairnhill Division, in celebration of National Family Week 2005.
People from all walks of life and across all ages are expected to take part in the carnival, particularly for Discovery Trail where families will form teams of at least three members each. They will go through hour-long challenges at different stations, engaging in activities such as telematches and team-building games, as well as quizzes, along the themes of Family, Sports and Heritage.
A key element of Discovery Trail is the use of 3G technology. This service provided by SingTel will enable carnival visitors to witness the challenges “live” on screens placed strategically in the campus. The ‘live’ reporting by Republic Polytechnic students using 3G technology is very much in line with the technology-centric campus which has a comprehensive wireless infrastructure and paperless culture.
The winning Discovery Trail teams will walk away with $6,000 worth of prizes sponsored by SingTel.
Discovery Trail is just one of the many activities of the BOUNCE Carnival. Guest-of-Honour Ms Indranee Rajah, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC & Advisor to Tanglin-Cairnhill GROs, will be leading about 600 participants in a mass workout to kickstart the carnival.
The line-up of activities also include hip hop, belly dancing and cultural performances, woodball and gateball demos, and a wheelchair basketball match between Republic Polytechnic students and members of the Handicaps Welfare Association.
Co-organiser of the event, Tanglin-Cairnhill Division, has roped in the support of grassroots organisations to mobilise the participation of residents. This marks a concerted community outreach effort to engage residents in healthy lifestyle activities which promote family togetherness and bonding.
Republic Polytechnic students also play an integral role in putting the event together – from handling logistics, emceeing and event flow to their first-time use of 3G technology for ‘live’ reporting on Discovery Trail.
This event is open to all members of the public. Those interested to take part in Discovery Trail can register through the website at http://discovery.rp.edu.sg/home/registration.asp
They can also register for the Discovery Trail on the day itself, 26 June 2005, by 9.45am at the Registration Counter at Republic Polytechnic’s Sports Complex.

About Tanglin-Cairnhill Division
Tanglin-Cairnhill Division is a newly formed division in Tanjong Pagar GRC after the 2001 General Election, with Miss Indranee Rajah as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC (Tanglin-Cairnhill). There are numerous Grassroots Organisations (GROs) within the Tanglin-Cairnhill Division, which work together to promote good citizenship, neighbourliness, harmony and cohesiveness among the residents in the Constituency through community bond activities and programmes. Among them, the Tanglin-Cairnhill Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) is the umbrella organisation of all GROs in Tanglin-Cairnhill. It plays a vital role in co-ordinating the work of the various grassroots organisations in the constituency, performing as a useful feedback channel between the government and the citizens, implementing government and local assistance schemes to help Singaporeans in need and promoting national campaigns at the community level. The CCC also works closely with the other GROs such as the Residents’ Committees (RCs), Neighbourhood Committees (NCs), Community Club Management Committees (CCMCs) and its sub-committees such as Youth Executive Committees (YECs), Women’s Executive Committees (WECs), Senior Citizens Executive Committee (SCECs), Malay Activity Executive Committees (MAECs) and Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC), Civil Defence Executive Committee (CDEC) and Constituency Sports Club (CSC) in organising activities and programmes to cater to the varied needs of the residents.
