SERVICE IN A FLASH!
Republic Polytechnic’s Flash ActionScript competition promotes service and the GEMS movement
Singapore, 19 April 2007 – This year’s ActionScript.Awards (ASA), organized by Republic Polytechnic’s School of Information and Communications Technology has its theme, ‘The Art of Service’. The competition, now in its third year, aspires to nurture the creativity and digital media creation skills of Singapore students and industry professionals.

Mervin Beng, Director for the School of Information and Communications Technology, Republic Polytechnic commented, “In formulating this year’s competition, we felt that contestants should test their talent in a realistic field and choosing ‘service’ as a theme is very appropriate. We are very pleased to collaborate with WDA’s GEMS movement this year to promote ActionScript and service together.”

The competition received support and endorsement from Adobe and the GEMS movement. GEMS is the Go-the-Extra-Mile-for-Service launched by Minister Raymond Lim in October 2005 to help champion and raise greater service awareness and quality in Singapore.

Contestants of ASA were required to create a variety of interactive digital content using Adobe Flash ActionScript. Attracting over 120 participants, more than 38 outstanding entries were submitted for the Junior, Student and Open categories, competing for a total of over $12,000 worth of prizes.

The winner of the Open category goes to ITE Lecturer, Arumugam Swamunathan, 32, who designed a board game based on the needs and expectations of customers. The Gold award in the Student category goes to Leong Kit Mei, 20, from ITE College West Dover Campus, whose storyboard incorporated interesting video-clips on good customer service. Winning the hearts of judges with their highly creative and interactive storyboard based on the story of Ah Tom, an ex-service provider whose soul is trapped in a diary due to bad service presentation and attitude, Siah Shu Fen and Chow Lin Ping, both 17, from CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School, swept away the Gold award in the Junior category. These winning entries will be distributed to all educational institutions as service education learning materials.

Mr Raymond Lim, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs will be Guest-of-Honor for the event. He will be presenting awards to the winners of the competition and announce the roll out of the GEMS Youth Outreach Programme.

The ASA Awards Ceremony will be held at Republic Polytechnic’s Woodlands campus on 19th April 2007.
