MULTI-CULTURAL MUSIC MARATHON CELEBRATES RACIAL HARMONY THROUGH MUSIC
Singapore, 8 March 2008 – The first Multi-Cultural Music Marathon, jointly organised by Riverside Secondary School, Republic Polytechnic and Woodlands Citizens’ Consultative Committee’s Arts-At-Woodlands Organising Committee, is a splendid showcase for young musical talents, aged between 7 and 18 years, to express their joy of living in multi-racial Singapore through music.177 students from 44 schools signed up for a series of auditions in February. Eventually, 61 students were selected for the five-hour long concert which will feature a total of 22 musical instruments from both Western and Eastern traditions, including the Chinese erhu, Malay talempong and Indian tabla. To mark this special occasion, the organisers produced a programme booklet filled with interesting nuggets of information about these instruments.
Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District and Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang said, “This event reflects the vibrancy of the Woodlands arts scene and the community’s success in nurturing young musical talents. The message of living in harmony with one another in our multi-racial nation is an apt one, for our success as a small nation depends on our cohesion and willingness to care for one another. Music, a universal language spoken and loved by the young, is a wonderful medium to express this message.”
Mr Eden Liew, Deputy Principal, Republic Polytechnic (RP) added, “RP is glad to have this opportunity to work with the schools, especially those in the North, and our community partners. We aspire to be a cultural hub and see this as another instance of successful collaboration with our friends and partners to add buzz to the arts scene for the enjoyment of residents and fellow Singaporeans.”
