Budding Scientists Showcase Their Projects
They Discover the Wonders of Science through the Republic’s Polytechnic’s Scientific Thinking Programme
Some of Singapore’s budding scientists from secondary schools will have their projects showcased at the Scientific Thinking Programme (STP) Awards Presentation Ceremony 2005.
The STP is organised by the Republic Polytechnic to nurture and train secondary school students and teachers to conduct scientific projects and practise scientific thinking skills. This is a six-month programme which culminates in the best projects being presented at a closing symposium on Thursday 28 July 2005.
A total of 16 secondary schools participated in this year’s STP, compared with 10 schools for the inaugural STP last year. Over the six-month period, starting February 2005, students and teachers participated in workshops, talks and project clinics, facilitated by advisors from Republic Polytechnic. In all, 22 student teams conducted their projects and submitted them in early July 2005.
The varied research topics and collection of ideas demonstrate the high level of curiosity of secondary school students. This natural curiosity is what the STP hopes to bring out, so as to nurture and sustain interest in science and technology.
The five most outstanding projects have been selected for presentation at the STP closing symposium. They include an incisive study into why certain canned drinks float on water while others sink, how herbs and spices inhibit bacterial growth, and the effects of electromagnetic field on plant growth.
Students will be on hand to talk about their project ideas and discoveries. There will also be a keynote address by the Republic Polytechnic’s Principal and CEO, Prof Low Teck Seng.
