PRESS RELEASE

Date : 9 Dec 2002 Subject : UNVEILING OF REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC’S LOGO

1. The Republic Polytechnic logo is unveiled today by the Chairman of its Board of Governors, Mr Lee Hsien Yang. The logo was selected from more than 600 designs submitted in a logo design competition held in September this year.

2. The logo (shown below) is designed by Mr Raymond Lee, a Deputy Art Editor with Singapore Press Holdings. He wins the top prize of $5000.

3. The merit prize winners are as follows:

Professional Category with a prize of $1000 each:

i. Ms Goh Li Ping

ii. Mr Karim See Chiang Cheng

iii. Ms Karen Huang Jiawen

Open Category with a prize of $500 each:

i. Mr Khaw Aik Kia

ii. Ms Tan Mui Siang

iii. Mr Ivo Widjaja

4. The modern shield or ‘badge of honour’ signifies the pride we take in education at the Republic. Cast in green and black, it eloquently symbolises the freshness, vigour and modernity of the learning experience we offer, and complements our unique situation as a campus-in-the-park when we move to our home in Woodlands.

5. The letters ‘R’ and ‘P’, standing for the name of our institution, can be found in two dynamic strokes that carve through each side of the shield. Their bold advance suitably represents our position as a leading pioneer in the field of Problem-Based Learning pedagogy, as well as our determination to ensure our education will reflect the latest developments in industry and technology.

6. A classic emblem for an exceptional institution of learning, our shield will maintain its appeal and relevance as we grow through the years, and as we seek to make our vision of the Republic - as a space for creativity, enterprise, and the holistic development of the individual - a reality.
