ACADEMIC INFORMATION *Updated 18 APRil 11

Overview *a must read for all students!

Each regular module at RP will be made up of 15 one-day learning engagements which are spread over 15 academic weeks (i.e. Week 1 to Week 15 of the Academic Calendar). For RP’s Academic Calendar, please click here.

The daily schedule for each class will be defined by the Group that the class is in – whether it is in Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D or Group E. Each class code (as shown in LEO) will indicate the Group at the end of the code. For example, in “G101-3-W34K-A” the final letter “A” indicates that the class will be held according to the “Group A” schedule.

Lesson start times will be 8:30 a.m. for Group A classes, 9:15 a.m. for Group B classes, 9:45 a.m. for Group C classes, 8:00 a.m. for Group D classes, and 12:30 p.m. for Group E classes. For the detailed timings for the classes, please refer to the section on Timings for Classes and Understanding Tests.

All students are expected to be punctual for class. The Daily Grades of students who arrive late and/or do not attend lessons fully will be affected by the level of academic engagement for the day. Please refer to the section on Attendance for details.

For each module, students will take a total of 3 compulsory Understanding Tests (UT 1, UT 2 and UT 3). UT 1 is scheduled around Weeks 5 to 7 and UT 2 is scheduled around Weeks 10 to 12 (subject to confirmation - see the exact dates for details). UT 1 and UT 2 will be conducted after class. UT 3 is scheduled after Week 15 of the Academic Calendar and allows for summative assessment of the concepts and ideas from all the Problems of the module. The duration of UT 1 and UT 2 will be 45 minutes each and that of UT 3 will be between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the module. For the schedule of UTs for the respective modules, please click here. For further details on UTs, please refer to the section on Understanding Tests.

The final Module Grade for a module is made up of two components: (1) Daily Grades and (2) UT Grades. The Daily Grades will constitute between 30% and 70% of the final Module Grade (depending on the module) and the UT grades will account for the remaining portion of the Module Grade.

For each one-day learning engagement, the student will be given a Daily Grade by the facilitator. All fifteen Daily Grades will be taken into account in the Daily Grades component in the computation of the Module Grade. The grades obtained from all 3 UTs (i.e. UT 1, UT 2 and UT 3) will be counted towards the computation of the final Module Grade and the relative weightage of the 3 UTs will be in the ratio of 1 : 1 : 2 (for UT 1 : UT 2 : UT 3). Please refer to Assessment Regulations for further details.

Students are strongly advised to attend all 15 lessons in each module, in order to prepare themselves well for the final examinations (UT3).

Attendance

Punctuality needs to be observed by all RP students. Our students are being prepared for employment in industry, and reporting to work on time is expected of all employees. In our classes, punctuality helps the class to start off smoothly, while latecomers hold back the entire team by slowing them down. Students should make allowances for heavy traffic and other causes of delay so as to ensure that they arrive at class on time.

On each lesson day, any student who arrives after the starting time (i.e. 8:31 a.m. onwards for Group A modules, 9:16 a.m. onwards for Group B modules, and 9:46 a.m. onwards for Group C modules, 8:01 a.m. onwards for Group D modules, and 12:31 p.m. onwards for Group E modules) shall be marked as ‘Late’ by the facilitator. Students who are not present for a significant part of any meeting will be marked as ‘Partial’ by the facilitator. The Daily Grades of students who are Late / Partial / Late & Partial will be affected by the level of academic engagement for the day. Students are strongly encouraged to work on the lesson materials from the start of class and throughout the duration of lesson to aid in their learning achievement.

Understanding Tests

For all modules, there will be 3 compulsory Understanding Tests (UTs) each. The grades obtained from all 3 UTs will be counted towards the computation of the final Module Grade. The relative weightage of the 3 UTs will be 1 : 1 : 2 (for UT 1 : UT 2 : UT 3).

For all modules, UT 1 and UT 2 are scheduled within the 15 Weeks of the Academic Calendar. UT 1 and UT 2 will usually be conducted after class and the duration of each of UT 1 and UT 2 will be 45 minutes. For some modules, UT 1 and/or UT 2 will not be a pen-and-paper or online test, but will take the form of an assignment to be submitted, a skill-based task to be performed, or some other form of assessment appropriate to the subject matter.

UT 3 will be held after Week 15 of the Academic Calendar and the duration of UT 3 will be between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the module. For the schedule of UTs for the respective modules, please refer to the section on Understanding Test Schedule.

Absence from any of the UTs without official Leave of Absence (LOA) will result in a failure (i.e. "X" grade and zero score) for that UT.  Students with approved Leave of Absence may be considered for taking the supplementary UT, depending on the UT for which the student has been granted a LOA.

SUPPLEMENTARY UTS

Students will be eligible to take the supplementary Understanding Test if one of the following conditions is satisfied:

  • Absence from both UT 1 and UT 2 with approved Leave of Absence (LOA) for both UT 1 and UT 2.
  • Absence from UT 3 with approved Leave of Absence for UT 3.
  • Absence from all 3 UTs (i.e. UT 1, UT 2 and UT 3) with approved Leave of Absence for all 3 UTs.

A student who is absent from UT without approved LOA will be deemed to have failed (i.e., given an "X" grade and zero score) for that UT.

UT 3 is scheduled after Week 15 of the Academic Calendar. The supplementary Understanding Test will be held following UT 3 at a date and time to be notified to the relevant students. The duration of the supplementary UT will be between 60 to 90 minutes.

Below is the summary table on the eligibility of supplementary UT and the weightage of the UTs:

Course Transfer

All students are expected to complete the course which they are enrolled into. However, under exceptional circumstances, students may request for a course transfer which may be allowed if there are vacancies. Nevertheless, students will not be allowed to transfer to any course if they did not meet the relevant cut-off point or other entry requirements for that course at the time of their entry. Students who wish to appeal for a course transfer should approach the Programme Chair of the course they are seeking to be admitted to. For students who are below 21 years of age, applications for course transfer must be countersigned by a parent or legal guardian.  The decision of RP on any application for course transfer will be final.
