DISASTER & FIRE EMERGENCY

The emergency preparedness skills and knowledge, Readiness is your only protection!

When disaster strikes, it usually comes without warning and can affect anyone. The routines of daily life will be disrupted. Emergency procedures are put in place to help you obtain the knowledge and be prepared in dealing with any emergency, be it a natural or man-made disaster.

A ready and prepared student population can effectively minimize the adverse effect of disaster and ensure the swift return to normalcy.

Be prepared, Readiness is your only protection!

Fire Alarm Systems

1. On the Polytechnic Campus, the Main Fire Alarm Control is located at RPC, Fire Command Center. Break-Glass call points and/or automatic fire detectors are installed in the various PODs. Portable fire extinguisher and hose reel have also been provided at various strategic points on each floor of a building.

2. All students in a building shall be familiar with the positions of the alarm call points and fire fighting appliances and to be ready to take immediate action in the event discovering a fire as safety is the responsibility of all concerned.

3. When the glass at an alarm position is broken or the fire detector is activated, the alarm bells within the building will ring. Fire Command Center will be alerted to investigate immediately. No one other than an authorized person on duty from the Estate Management Office shall be allowed to reset the Fire Alarm bells after they have been activated. The alarm bells are allowed to cut-off only after the affected area has been thoroughly checked and confirmed fire safe.

Disaster & Emergency Procedures

1) In the event of emergency, stay calm and do not panic. Assistance may be summoned by contacting RP Fire Command Center at 63768222. When making an emergency call, it is essential to give precise information:

  • Name of Caller
  • Location
  • Nature of Emergency

2) Emergency calls are answered by on-duty security person who will direct a call to the appropriate outside service and/or agencies and also inform the Estate Management Office for necessary action(s).

Fire Emergency Procedures

1) Informant, the person who discovers the fire shall immediately

  • Raise the alarm by activating the nearest fire alarm “Break-Glass” call point
  • Shout ‘fire, fire, fire’ at the location of the fire.
  • Attempt to extinguish the fire with fire fighting equipment if it can be done without personal risk
  • Inform RP Fire Command Center at 63768222 and provide precise information (Name/Location/Nature of Emergency)

2) All students, upon hearing the fire alarm messages through the Public Address (PA) System,

  • Shall remain calm and attempt to ascertain the situation before getting ready to evacuate,
  • Leave the floor concerned in an orderly manner by the staircase guided by their respective floor fire warden/assistant fire warden/facilitator. They shall assemble at the Assembly Area and shall not wander about thereat.

3) When evacuating

  • Do not panic, rush or push one another down the staircases. Walk quickly in an orderly manner.
  • Do not re-enter the room or floor unless directed to do so by fire warden/assistant fire warden of your floor or responsible person in charge of the evacuation.
  • Do not return to the building to collect personal luggage or belongings.
  • Do not use the lifts.
  • Do not walk upright in a smoke-logged room but crawl out.

4) After evacuating:

  • Assemble at the assembly area for easy headcounts. Do not wander about the area.
  • Do not disperse but remain at the assembly area unless instructed otherwise.

In the event that the school is closed due to an outbreak of Pandemic Flu/SARs, Students will be informed of the Polytechnic closure via the followings:

  • Pop-up announcement
  • Leo announcement
  • Short Messaging Service(SMS)
