In SAS, we can achieve
Welcome to the School of Applied Science. And welcome to the Republic Polytechnic.
In 2003, our Polytechnic, sometimes called RP, opened its doors at its temporary campus at Tanglin Road to a pioneering group of 800 students. Around 200 of them were Science students.
In 2006, our first batch of students graduated and we moved to our purpose-built Woodlands Campus. In 2007, we welcomed 3,600 freshmen. Nearly 750 were Science students. In just five years, RP has tutored 1,800 science students, arguably the largest number among the Singapore’s five polytechnics. The number of science diplomas we offer has grown from one in 2003 to five in 2007.
Come 2009, we will take in 880 students for the School’s five diploma programmes. A distinctive culture has taken root in RP. Time and time again, visitors have expressed how dynamic our students are -- in the way they put forward arguments, present their case and use information. These are clear signs of the attitudes and approaches that will stand RP graduates in good stead as they take on the world.
At the School of Applied Science, we have an unwavering mission to nurture learning and growth in students. This has resulted in the School’s students being selected to represent Singapore at the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (Germany) and in the 3rd Eco- Minds Asia Pacific Forum (Auckland and Rotorua, New Zealand). The School’s contributions to the national environmental movement have also been acknowledged – a member of our staff won the National Environmental Agency Ecofriend Award in 2008.
Our graduates are doing just as well, making inroads into allied health professions by taking up careers and pursuing higher education in healthcare areas. The vigour that comes from believing in the intertwining and synergy of Science and Problem Based Learning as a way of acquiring knowledge underlines our culture.
The School has taken the best traditions and ideas from both methodologies to establish a unique educational experience. On this, students can build on their talents, and find fuel for their creative passions to go higher and further.
