SAS Labs
The School of Applied Science labs form the very core of our technical capabilities. Our 28 wet labs and its associated facilities integrates synergistically with our 5 diploma programs and serves to:
- Develop the technical abilities of our students through research projects developed by our academic staff
- Drive innovation through the provision of the cutting edge facilities and equipment for staff research programs
- Support the school’s curriculum needs as well as our outreach activities
The school recognizes that scientific innovation within the 21st century is highly dependent on the ability to integrate our research capabilities across scientific domains. Therefore our labs are organized to facilitate the collaborative multi-disciplinary nature of the projects undertaken by the school.
Our labs are organized into 4 verticals:
- Technology Development
This vertical houses the specialized equipment employed in some of our niche research areas including our interests in environmental technology, pharmaceutical technology and functional foods.
- Experimental
Our molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology and microbiology associated equipment are housed under the experimental vertical. Our capabilities include the ability to perform microbial, genomic and proteomic analysis.
- Procedural
The procedural labs provides the required equipment to support several key biomedical science related projects including the production of biologics and aseptic dispensing, as well as our medical technology capabilities within the fields of clinical chemistry, histopathology and hematology.
- Analytical
The analytical vertical is the focal point of our physical science related equipment and facilities. These facilities includes our materials characterization facilities as well as our mass spectroscopy and analytical chemistry units.
