Scientific Thinking explores the creativity and
innovation of the mind

The Scientific Thinking Programme, or STP, is designed to introduce the scientific thinking method to secondary 2 and 3 students. Using science as a method of investigating nature, a way of knowing about nature and discovering reliable knowledge about nature.

What is RP's involvement?

Secondary schools involved in this programme will undergo PBL science activities demonstrating the scientific method for project ideas. Student and teacher teams will then propose ideas which will be shaped into scientific questions with the guide of RP facilitators. The team will then attempt to gather data, both experimental and from literature to solve the question. A competition is being planned for participating teams to present their findings.

How can I be involved?

Facilitators from RP will work with participating secondary school teams. SAS students who are interested in mentoring can also be involved.

Science and Mathematics Pursuit

The inaugural Science and Mathematics Pursuit 2010 for North Zone Schools started as one of the collaborations between Republic Polytechnic and Science Centre Singapore. This event was successfully completed on 25 and 26 October with a total of 19 schools from the North Zone participating. The contestants learned about Science and Mathematics while having a great deal of fun at the same time. The event was well received by contestants from the participating schools.

During these two days, students were engaged in various interesting challenges from across the four disciplines, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The format of the competition on Day 1 held at Republic Polytechnic was Quiz Competition, Outdoor Challenges and Laboratory Challenges. The second day was held at Science Centre Singapore where contestants had a chance to compete on a Science Gallery Trail specially designed by Science Centre Singapore. The Science Gallery Trail comprised a series of interesting science questions where answers could be found in the various galleries. Contestants were also required to complete a series of hands-on challenges at various stations.

The event ended in the afternoon of 26 October with the Prize Presentation Ceremony. Dr Terence Chong, Director of SAS and Mrs Anne Dhanaraj, Director of Life Sciences and Publications, Science Centre Singapore were there to give away the prizes.

This event witnessed the collaboration of colleagues across schools. Staff from SAS and SEG were involved with support from OCC. It is truly a testimonial of one of Republic Polytechnic’s core values in action, Teamwork.

How can I be involved?

Facilitators could be involved in crafting meaningful challenges and helping with planning and execution of the event. Interested RP students can sign up for the event as helpers subjected to their availability.
