Technology Development Labs

1. Pharmaceutical Technology W52F (W52S3)
Staff-In-Charge: Dr Michelle Siow

Capabilities: This lab has capabilities to support pharmaceutical processes such as powder characterization, microencapsulation, granulation and tableting technology. The lab is equipped to support research and development in the field of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and dietary supplements. Ongoing research involves formulation studies and evaluation of process variables that impact product optimization. Existing research includes stability tests, process validations, analytical methodologies development and validation.

Major Equipment: Dissolution Tester, Friability Tester, Disintegration Apparatus, Single Punch Tablet Press, Tablet Hardness Tester, Moisture Analyzer

Current Projects Carried Out:
  • Development of dietary supplement tablet in collaboration with Bionutra (PI: Dr Michelle Siow)
  • Microencapsulation student tote project (PI: Wu Jing Yi and Dr Michelle Siow)
  • Optimization of tablet compression based on the physical properties and dose of active pharmaceutical ingredient in the tablet formulation (PI: Dr Michelle Siow)
2. Water Technology W52D (W52N3)
Staff-In-Charge: Dr Chua Hwee Chuan

Capabilities: This lab is equipped with the state of art equipment for water and wastewater treatment. There is also expertise in membrane technology.

Major Equipment: Total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) Analyzers

Current Projects Carried Out:
  • Development of membrane bioreactor technology for wastewater treatment (PI: Dr Chua Hwee Chuan)
  • Development of low cost biogas production system (Service Learning initiative) (PI: Dr Matthew Wong)
3. Chemical Synthesis W51F (W51S4)

Staff-In-Charge: Dr Susmita Ban

Capabilities: Our laboratory provides opportunities for synthesis and characterization of organic, inorganic and organometallic compounds. We are equipped with customized setups to carry out reactions under inert conditions using Schlenck lines. We are currently exploring methods to optimize reactions via microwave-assisted synthesis the Biotage reactor explore.

Major Equipment: Microwave Reactor, SRS Melting Point Apparatus

Current Projects Carried Out:

  • Organic synthesis and characterization of novel two-photon absorbing compounds (PI: Dr Doreen Teo)
4. Functional Food W52E (W52S4)

Staff-In-Charge: Ms Soo Wei Kwan

Capabilities: This lab has capabilities to support R&D work on formulation and development of functional food products. A separate room in the lab is housed with analytical instruments to support formulation studies, stability studies and quality control of food/herbal products development.

Major Equipment: Food Texture Analyzer

Current Projects Carried Out:

  • Formulation and Sensory Considerations of Functional Chocolates (PI: Cecilia Chua Peck Loo and Pearly Ng)
  • Development of Nutraceutical Ice cream in collaboration with Pappito (PI: Liesbet Tan and Michael Koh)
  • Formulation of a functional drink with natural ingredients (PI: Michelle Siow and Amy Choong)
  • Formulation and development of shelf stable functional brownies (in collaboration with Foodedge Gourmet) (PI: Soo Wei Kwan and Lisa Kavita Rajah)
  • Development of healthy snack food using functional starch ingredients (PI: Xing Jie)
  • Development of soy-based yoghurt (in collaboration with Dawyn) (PI: Janice Yong)
5. Eco Remediation  

Staff-In-Charge: Dr Tan Lay Pheng and Dr Amy Choong

Capabilities: This facility will provide the ability to support the cultivation of plants through small scale plant tissue cultures to mature plants for their use in remediation. The facility will also support the cultivation of marine life for ecological studies.

Major Equipment: Aquaculture Tanks, Greenhouse facilities

Current Projects Carried Out:

  • Phytoremediation of heavy metals (PI: Dr Tan Lay Pheng)
  • Vertical greening (PI: Dr Amy Choong)
6. Renewable Energy  

Staff-In-Charge: Dr Wong Luh Cherng

Capabilities: This facility will be equipped with the required equipment to support projects in energy cogeneration and the optimization of energy use.

Major Equipment: Biogas reactor, Gas Engine, Dehumidifier

7. Anatomy Learning  

Staff-In-Charge: Dr Girija, Ms Cherry Chan and Dr Jim Tan

Capabilities: This facility will equipped with anatomical models and simulations.

8. RP/NTU Materials Processing lab W52H (W52S1)

Staff-In-Charge: Dr Valavan S and Ms Vicky Wu

Capabilities: This lab is equipped to process and characterize electro-ceramic thin film materials as well as to determine the mechanical properties of dental and bone materials.

Major Equipment: Atomic Force Microscope, Micro Tester, Micro Vicker Hardness Tester, Surface Roughness Tester, Ion Selective Meter, Data Logger, Precision Universal Testing Machine, RF/DC sputtering system, Solgel processing equipment, spin coating equipment
