Poverty in Singapore - A STA FYP Service - Learning Initiative
From 18 - 20 January 2011, students from
the Diploma in Design for Interactivity Final Year Project team
0065 (School of Technology for the Arts) produced an art
installation to raise awareness of existing poverty in
Singapore. This was a Service-Learning initiative in which the
team transformed the space in The Republic Cultural Centre
Practice Room 1C into a walk-through tour of a one-room flat,
inspiring their audience to help alleviate the issue of poverty.
Their goal was for the audience to reconsider modifying their
own lifestyles and realise how their changes could help ease the
problem of poverty locally.
As a team of interaction designers, they devised space-saving
furniture designs which could improve the lives of low income
families. They also opened up and allowed their audience to use
the installation as an inspiration for ideas and to give design
suggestions on how the families’ living conditions could be
improved.
