How does professional expertise develop?

Henk G. Schmidt

The goal of many curricula in post-secondary education is to graduate a competent professional, someone who, as a doctor, an engineer, a lawyer, can contribute to the development of society or the wellbeing of those around him or her. But what is professional competence? And which characteristics of a curriculum contribute to the development of professional competence?

This talk will deal with the development of expertise, with the professional skills and personal characteristics of a professional that contribute to his or her success, with deliberate practice as an instrument to reach high levels of expertise, and with the role of education. Relevant research will be presented.
