Self-directed learning as learning process and a learning outcome

Charlotte Silén

Self-directed learning, SDL, is a core concept in problem-based learning, PBL, but the relations between SDL as a method of and goal for education have not been thoroughly analysed, resulting in a circular definition of SDL – to become self-directed the student needs to be self-directed.

The presentation will be based on facilitating experiences within PBL and own research about development of responsibility and independence in learning. It will address SDL as a learning issue and reason about the significance of SDL considered as an important learning outcome for life long learning.
