What do we know about problem-based learning?: Current status and future prospects
Cindy Hmelo-Silver

Problem-based learning has been around for more than two decades and yet, we still don’t completely understand if the ambitious goals for PBL have been met. The goals of PBL include helping students develop
  1. flexible knowledge,
  2. effective problem-solving skills,
  3. self-directed learning skills,
  4. effective collaboration skills, and
  5. intrinsic motivation.
This presentation will review the current state of research both on the effectiveness of PBL as well as examining how student learning is accomplished in PBL. Understanding both the current state of the art for PBL and future prospects are key issues in setting an agenda for research and development in PBL.
