Exploring different kinds of good teaching
Dan Pratt
For over twenty years, Professor Pratt and his graduate students have been exploring the way teachers in further education go about their work. (e.g., Pratt and Associates 1998) Among over 250 teachers studied, they found five significantly different ‘Perspectives on Teaching’ – Transmission, Apprenticeship, Developmental, Nurturing and Social Reform.
Participants will be introduced to each of the five teaching perspectives and research that differentiates highly effective teaching from adequate and poor teaching within the five perspectives. Each perspective will be introduced as a set of BIASes that characterize that perspective. Participants will consider how the five perspectives and research findings apply across different teaching formats, for example, large group didactic lectures, one-on-one clinical teaching, and small group PBL tutorials.
Part of the workshop will be devoted to helping participants interpret their individual perspectives on teaching as revealed in the TPI (see below). In this interpretive work, participants will consider how their teaching profile compares to more than 100,000 educators from around the world that have taken the TPI.
At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Discuss qualities that characterize highly effective teaching;
- Interpret their own TPI profile and how it relates to effective teaching;
- Compare and contrast their own TPI profile with other TPI profiles;
- Understand and appreciate perspectives different from their own;
- Consider the fit between teaching perspectives and teaching venues;
NOTE:
As you take the TPI, it is important that you stay focused on one group of learners, one subject, and the format for teaching that subject to those learners.
You are welcome to take the TPI as many times as you wish, focusing on different students and circumstances.
Bring three (3) copies of your profile (bar graph) to the workshop to share with other participants.
