Presenting at "Reinventing PBL"

CALL for PROPOSALS is CLOSED

Presentation Formats

Presenters at "Reinventing PBL" will have a choice of one of the following presentation formats:

(1) PBL Tutorial
(2) Research Paper
(3) Posters
(4) Workshop

Description:

(1) PBL Tutorial

The “PBL Tutorial” will be the highlight of “Reinventing PBL”. Symposium participants can submit a problem to trigger a discussion, and act as the facilitator for the discussion. (The Symposium delegates will see how PBL is done!)

The “PBL Tutorial” is ideal for those who wish to show how PBL is shaped and being shaped by the teaching of discipline subjects or demonstrate novel techniques and tools for teaching.

The audience will be challenged to review their own practices in PBL and “reinvent” their teaching.

Participants who choose this format are encouraged to submit a research paper that will act as a resource for that discussion. If accepted, the problem triggers and research paper will be published in the conference proceedings.

The symposium organisers plan to allocate 2 to 3 hours to each presentation, and request participants to limit the presentation of their research papers to 10 minutes, so that a significant portion of the time can be devoted to the interactive part of the tutorial.

(2) Research Paper

We welcome papers that put forward claims, conclusions and/ or research findings that are novel, interesting and/ or significant; and are supported by substantial justification.

Each author has an opportunity to present an abbreviated version of his or her paper. A critique of discussion may follow each paper, or the papers may be critiqued and/ or discussed as a group. Assigning three or four papers to a session allows approximately 5 minutes for the chair to introduce the session, 25 minutes per author presentation (including 5 minutes of critique) and 15 minutes of general discussion for all papers.

(3) Posters

Presenters may choose to use posters to reach out to the wide audience at the symposium. Posters can be used to display special features or crucial findings of research work, interesting PBL triggers, pictures, etc.

Poster presenters will be given a specific time to put up their posters within the premises of the symposium. After that, delegates of the symposium will be allowed to freely visit the poster stations, and provision will be made for questions to be submitted so that these may be addressed in a discussion session.

For the discussion sessions, presenters will be grouped together thematically. Presenters will respond to the questions received or hold informal discussions with fellow delegates.

Each poster should be limited to ‘A2’ size - WIDTH: 420mm (16.54inch) x HEIGHT: 594mm (23.39inch). Up to 2 posters will be allowed per presenter. Text and pictures should be easily viewable from a distance. (Font size of at least 20 is recommended.)

A brief abstract of the research paper, if applicable, should also be included. A handout is also recommended so that fellow colleagues can have some useful notes to take with them.

(4) Workshop

Participants can choose to conduct a workshop which may help the delegates gain new ideas about PBL, teaching and learning, staff development, or employ novel technologies in the classroom and so on. While a new research paper is not a pre-requisite for this mode of presentation, the workshop should fit within the various themes.

As “Reinventing PBL” hopes to be a vibrant exchange of ideas, educators, teaching and educational organisations, private training consultants are welcome to present workshops adapted from their own full-length programmes. Interested parties are welcomed to submit a draft proposal for discussion.
