Electronics Design TDC secured SIR TOTE Fund for Community-based Project The Electronics Design TDC has done RP proud once again by securing the highly competitive SIR Tote Fund for the Interactive 3D and Game-based Learning Solutions for Individuals with Special Needs project. The team from the School of Engineering to be headed by Mr Jeffery Koh will be working closely with the staff from the Training and Development Centre of the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS). The School of Engineering will be capitalizing on its expertise in sensor systems for 3D displays in order to design and develop the learning platform for the intellectually challenged.The main advantage of this 3D learning system as compared to commercially available ones is its flexibility in integrating different types of sensors in interacting with the 3D environment. Students can use the Xbox game controllers, gaming gloves, tracking devices, neural headset, facial gestures and voice control to manipulate objects on a 3D screen. Research has shown that the use of 3D learning systems for the intellectual disabled can help boost mental faculties and increase their attention span. Besides designing and developing the hardware and software for the system, the project team will also create suitable contents for the curriculum to teach students on the concept of numbers, time and money. Their basic understanding of these topics will allow them to lead a more independent life and relief their caretakers of the heavy burden of accompanying them at all times. The students are also expected to find it easier to blend in with mainstream society when they are able to appreciate these concepts well. This project marks a milestone in RP’s on-going efforts to help the less fortunate by improving the quality of their lives as well as the lives of their guardian and caretakers. The project will be broken down into several phases as shown below:
