Summary of Technology Day on 14th Oct 2009 There is no doubt that 14th Oct 2009 was a momentous date for the Electronics Design TDC. On this day the School of Engineering joined forces with the School of Applied Science to organize an event which has brought together organizations and professionals from the area of sustainable technology. The event is none other then Technology Day 2009 which saw an almost record turnout. Firstly, the event was designed to be a melting pot of ideas which can bring mutual benefits to all its participants and audiences. Secondly, it was used as a soft-launch platform for the Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering. Students were also involved in the various tasks which helped them enrich their knowledge about clean energy and the various technologies which are used to support it.
The event featured an opening speech by Mr Yeo Li Pheow, Principal/CEO of Republic Polytechnic and a keynote address by Mrs Rosa Daniel, Deputy Secretary (Policy) of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. Ms Grace Cheok-Chan representing the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) also spoke about BCA’s ongoing and future efforts in reducing our energy demands and cutting down on the carbon footprint.

Last but not least at the end of the main program the managers from Electronics Design TDC (SEG), New Materials TDC (SAS) and Environment TDC (SAS) presented their contributions in positioning RP as a major player in the field of sustainable technology.
The event then separated into 3 different tracks - Environmental Science, New Materials and Electronic Design. The track by Electronics Design TDC started off with a signing ceremony with the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS). The ceremony marked the beginning of a collaborative effort between RP and SERIS to further the R&D in improving the solar panel performance for tropical region. The two signatories were Dr Wang Jianguo, Director of School of Engineering and Mr Andre Nobre, project manager, photovoltaic systems technology, SERIS.
Mr Andre then delivered his presentation on the various roles that SERIS play to reduce our excessive reliance on fossil fuels and bringing us closer to an environmentally friendly future.
The next speaker, Associate Prof. Ali Maswood from the division of power engineering, NTU, spoke of the various technologies in the alternative energy landscape and how they can be beneficial to a country like Singapore.
National Instruments has been aware of the global trend in the push for clean energy and Mr C.K. Chung, Area Sales Manager, emphasized this in his presentation. He presented on the various hardware and software which can be used to streamline clean energy projects as well as reduce their cost and complexity.
The seminar would be incomplete without the participation of Mr Quek Yang Thee in presenting his work on the design and development of the Unmanned Renewable Energy Vehicle. One unique feature of the vehicle is the pneumatic storage system which can ultimately allow the vehicle to operate without the use of any batteries.
The audience were then treated to a sumptuous meal where they mingled freely with those from the other tracks (Environment TDC and New Materials TDC). The synergy between the various disciplines was overwhelming and the record turnout was clearly visible. The exhibitors and sponsors were glad they took part in the event.
After lunch some of the audience headed to two separate LabVIEW hands-on workshops hosted by National Instruments at W1.03.21 and W1.03.22. This was the last activity of the day and brought the highly successful event to a close.
