ENVIRONMENTAL TECH DAY 2008

Republic Polytechnic’s first inaugural Environmental Tech Day was held on 10 September 2008. With increasing concerns over climate change, various sectors (government, private sectors as well as non-governmental organizations) have come together in a move towards achieving effective change to reverse climate change. One of the solutions is to ensure sustainable development of a country’s economy is Environmental Technology.

The Tech Day’s theme – Converting Waste to Valuable Resources, aims to showcase the latest environmental technology in converting wastes (food, oil, water, soil, horticultural wastes) to valuable resources such as energy, fuel and heat.

Mr Yeo Li Pheow, Principal and CEO of Republic Polytechnic, shared with the rest of the participants the need to introduce state-of-the-art, cutting-edge capability and design to stay ahead of the technological race to protect the environment, enhance and sustain our resources in order to achieve the kind of economic growth and prosperity we desire.

Our Guest of Honour, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of The Environment, Water and Resources (MEWR), also highlighted the importance of maximizing resource efficiency and improving environmental performance of processes, systems and products in her opening address. A series of talks began with Mr Howard Shaw, Executive Director of the Singapore Environment Council, providing his insights on the trends in Environmental Technology. Mr Tan Hai Woon, Chief Technological Officer, of Alpha Synovate, had also given an inspiring speech on how their company had translated science into successful business.

A Memorandum of Understanding, signed between Ecovac and RP, Furon Oil Technologies and RP as well as Alpha Synovate and RP, marks the partnership between industrial partners and Republic Polytechnic to work towards achieving a zero effluent community.

Env Tech Day had been a unique event being that student/staff projects were featured along with the Community’s green projects as well as Industry partners and statutory boards environmental technology initiatives. It had been an excellent platform whereby ideas were fermented, knowledge was exchanged and collaborations were forged.
