How it is useful?

Manufacturing processes and logistics systems are frequently complex enough to warrant a study at the system level. Independencies between components of the system (multi-stage manufacturing processes, bullwhip effect in a multi-echelon supply chain, etc) and dynamic uncertainties (demand fluctuations, disaster scenarios, etc) require the use of simulation to manage bottlenecks and critical points. The benefits of a well conducted simulation study are improvement of operational efficiencies and reduction of risk during planning. Potential use of this technique includes:

-          Short, medium and long-term capacity planning

-          Capital allocation

-          Design of manufacturing processes

-          Operational policies and algorithms

-          Production and employee scheduling and control

-          Facility equipment planning and layout

-          Inventory optimization

-          Design of supply chain structure

-          Distribution and transportation routing strategies

-          Scenario planning
