RP Partners NIE to Engage Youths in Financial Literacy Competition
12 November 2011
The Financial Literacy Race, also known as the FLY, was held at the Singapore Flyer on 12 November 2011. This eight-station race centred upon the Central Business District and was jointly organized by Republic Polytechnic (RP) and the Financial Literacy Hub for Teachers (Citi-NIE). The race began at the Singapore Flyer with each team being accompanied by an RP student helper. Dr Koh Noi Keng, Chairman of Citi-NIE, flagged off the enthusiastic participants. The race aimed to engage over 200 students from various secondary schools in learning about financial literacy. Through the event, our TDC project team seeks to determine whether there is any significant difference in the level of financial literacy for students participating in a financial race. Students are required to solve some questions related to financial literacy during the race.

One of the eight stations saw students going through different life stages spanning 40 years from young adulthood to retirement. Students had to make tough life decisions such as whether to own a car, get married or work beyond the age of 62. Every decision carried a monetary value and points that represented "units of happiness" and the goal was to reach a minimum of S$150,000 in retirement savings and 40 "units of happiness" points.
The game ended with the cheers all around from the 200 student participants and RP student helpers as RP's Director of
Centre for Innovation and Enterprise (CIE), Mr Tan Huan Peow announced the winners of the race. The S$1,500 worth of book vouchers sponsored by Citi-NIE went to teams from Hwa Chong Institution (1st and 3rd place), Bedok North Secondary School (2nd place), Bedok Green Secondary School and Coral Secondary School (4th and 5th places). The Best Saver Award went to an all-girls team from Nanyang Girls' School.
