The Needy Student Fund (Student Pocket Money Scheme and Student Emergency Money Scheme) helps students from low-income families sustain their daily expenses and tide over financial difficulties or emergency situations.

Student Pocket Money Scheme (SPMS)


SPMS assists students from low-income families who find it a challenge to sustain their daily living expenses such as food, transport and other school-related expenses. 

Amount

  • $150/month (up to a total of $900 in one academic year*)

Note: The timing of a student's application will determine the funding period and hence, the total quantum awarded for the academic year. 

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Singapore Citizen/ Singapore Permanent Resident
  • Full-time student of RP
  • Per Capita Income ≤ $750 or Gross Household Income ≤ $3,000 (Income criteria of Higher Education Community Bursary Tier 1)
  • Not receiving any other pocket money assistance

How to apply

  • Applications for SPMS from Academic Year 2024 will be considered on a needs basis.
  • Students who meet one or more of the following "Needs Basis Attributes" will receive an email to apply for SPMS in June/July 2024:
    • Residing in a HDB rental flat (i.e. HDB 1-room or 2-room)* or HDB 2-room Flexi
    • Assisted by MSF ComCare (i.e. Short-to-Medium Term Assistance or Long Term Assistance)
    • Awarded Student Emergency Money Scheme (SEMS) in the same academic year
    • Other special circumstances (if applicable) or assisted by Social Service Agencies

Note: *Exclude students who live in a room/flat rented from the open market.



Student Emergency Money Scheme (SEMS)


The Student Emergency Money Scheme provides compassionate assistance to students from low-income families, to help with recent emergency and/or crisis situations.

Amount

  • $1,000

Note: Eligible applicants can receive financial assistance from SEMS only once per academic year.  


Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time student of RP
  • Per Capita Income ≤ $750 or Gross Household Income ≤ $3,000 (Income criteria of Higher Education Community Bursary Tier 1)
  • Family crisis/emergency situation within the last 6 months
  • Applicants are required to attend an interview with staff from Office of Student Support for assessment of eligibility.
