This module increases students’ awareness of the current environmental challenges faced by humanity. The first part of the module provides students with a fundamental understanding of the natural ecosystem. This is followed by an evaluation of the causes and impacts of various environmental issues such as global warming, loss of biodiversity, plastic pollution, environmental toxins and vectors, unsustainable food production, and non-renewable energy resources. The module also covers a review on the importance of sustainable development through conservation, environmentally-sustainable technologies, educational outreach, legislations, and intergovernmental accords (e.g. The Paris Agreement), with an emphasis on the efforts made by Singapore (e.g. Singapore Green Plan and Sustainable Singapore Blueprint).
