A210 Protein Technologies
This module delves into the structure-function relationship of proteins and other biomolecules (mainly DNA), the forces influencing the regulatory, structural, protective and transport roles of proteins.
Students will acquire knowledge and skills that will allow them to be competent in applying biochemical techniques in the expression, separation, identification, and purification of proteins. Techniques in protein structure-function analysis, such as SDS PAGE, column chromatography and protein crystallography will be covered in this module. In addition, students will demonstrate their understanding of protein interactions with other biomolecules using protein visualisation software. Through understanding protein interactions, students will relate to innovations in biotechnology such as drug discovery, diagnostics, and the development of new therapeutic strategies. Furthermore, this module will explore the critical role of protein engineering and design within the field of synthetic biology.
