A241 Cell Culture

Students will understand the use of different cell culture techniques and explore their applications in different fields of research and healthcare. Students are given hands-on experience in the basic techniques of in vitro mammalian cell culture, proliferation, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, cryopreservation, gene expression through transfection procedures, and isolation of primary cell cultures. In addition, the module introduces the use of animal and plant cells as a means of producing proteins and bio-active compounds of commercial importance. Trends in the applications of cell culture, such as bioprinting, cultivated meats and alternative proteins, will be discussed. Through this module, students will understand how different techniques can be used to study the biology of the cell, and how they can be used in combination to answer specific questions relating to research in cell functions and their applications in life science industries.
