A245 Recombinant DNA Technologies
This module aims to help students in their acquisition of skills in molecular cloning to produce recombinant proteins.
The practical-based module will focus on recombinant DNA techniques, as well as reinforce concepts of scientific thinking, planning and analysis of experiments, record keeping, literature reading, and presentation of results. Topics covered in this module will aid in the understanding of cloning, which involves knowledge of the properties of nucleic acids, DNA isolation, Polymerase Chain Reaction, agarose gel electrophoresis, designing of primers, introduction of DNA into cells, properties of restriction enzymes, and many more. Vector properties, as well as protein expression and purification, will be covered as well. Throughout the module, students will be required to consolidate their prior knowledge in microbiology, genetics, and molecular cell biology.
