A254 Forensic Science
This module introduces you to the scientific principles and techniques of forensic chemistry and materials failure analysis, and how they are applied to solve legal problems.
The module will introduce the types and sources of forensic evidence, the general steps of forensic analysis, the microscale techniques and common laboratory equipment used for chemical analysis, and the statistical methods and quality assurance procedures used for interpretation and evaluation of results. The module will also explore the causes and mechanisms of material failure, such as corrosion, and how they can be detected and analysed using different analytical techniques, such as microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography, etc. The module will provide students with practical skills in performing chemical and mechanical analysis on forensic samples, such as fingerprints, drugs, metals, ceramics, polymers, etc., and communicating the findings clearly and concisely.
