A322 Genomics
Genomics is a module that allows students to explore the vast diversity of genes, their functions, and interactions.
This module aims to provide students with knowledge about the structure, sequencing, and functional analysis of genomes, mainly the human genome. It includes a review of the genome structure, its mapping and sequencing, the use of model organisms, and the applications of different types of markers used to construct genetic maps, such as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), simple sequence length polymorphisms (SSLPs) and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Methodologies such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), comparative genomics, and functional genomics will be discussed in the module. Students will also be trained in lab techniques used in the detection and analysis of the genome. Towards the end of the module, students will relate the use of genomics concepts and techniques in pharmacogenomics, bioinformatics, developing genetically modified organisms, and the field of medical diagnostics. In addition, students will learn how to utilise basic bioinformatic tools to obtain and analyse DNA sequences.
