Course overview
The Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology is a collaboration between Republic Polytechnic (RP) and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). By the end of the programme, you will gain a strong foundation in biomedical instrumentation and device design. You will also be equipped with the skills and knowledge to support medical professionals.
This programme provides an articulation path for graduates who wish to further their studies with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at SUSS.
The Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology (SDBT) equips participants with relevant skill sets to support the increasing demand in the field of medical devices and technology. Participants will learn the principles, applications, technology and design of medical sensors, devices and instruments commonly used in healthcare and the medical technology industry. These include, but are not limited to, cardiac devices, ophthalmological devices, biomedical implants, spirometers, medical imaging instruments, etc.
Upon completion of both certificates, participants will acquire competency and gain hands-on experience in the design, regulation, maintenance, and operation of biomedical devices and equipment.
Through practical, industry-focused learning, you will:
Be equipped with firm grounding in biomedical device and instrument operation and maintenance
Master concepts and fundamentals to design biomedical device and instrument.
Develop the ability to select suitable medical imaging and visualization technique to help diagnose medical problems in human body
Develop skills to assess performance of biomedical device and instrument and implement improvement solutions.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the diploma, students will be able to:
Promote the adoption of digital technologies in healthcare sector
Support smart healthcare development and operation.
Build capability to choose appropriate medical imaging and visualization methods for diagnosing health conditions in the human body.
Develop expertise to evaluate how biomedical devices and instruments perform and to apply effective improvements.

Working adults who wish to upgrade their skills and knowledge to support the growing needs of the biomedical technology industry.
Mode of assessment
Various assessment modes including graded assignments, written exams and class quizzes would be used for different modules.

Various learning resources and learning tools would be introduced in the respective modules when course commences.
Course structure
You will be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Technology upon successful completion of two Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs).

Biomedical Sensors and Measurements | The aim of this course is to teach students the principles, design and applications of the medical sensors and measurement technology commonly used in the healthcare industry. Fundamental principles of sensors and devices will be covered, and systemic analysis and design will also be introduced. The student will also learn about digital healthcare with emphasis on personalised biomedical devices. |
Biomedical Instrumentation and Systems | The aim of this course is to teach students the principles, design and applications of the medical instruments most commonly used in the healthcare industry. Quantitative methods of analysis are developed, including simplifying assumptions to help the students understand and design an instrumentation system for diagnostic and therapeutic medical applications. Integration of systems through the Internet of Things (IoT) and the concept of networking will be introduced. |
On-the-job training cum project | Students on the ELP track will be involved in an On-the-Job training (OJT) at their place of employment. A project on designing/regulating biomedical devices will be structured with the employer. Students are expected to execute the project at the workplace. Through hands-on experience in designing and improving biomedical devices, students will acquire a greater understanding of the progress and advancement of tools used in healthcare. Non-ELP track students will be assigned in-house projects in place of the OJT component. |
Medical Imaging | This course covers various aspects of medical imaging, image processing and visualisation. Topics include X-Ray, Magnetic Resonance, Functional Infrared Thermal imaging and Ultrasonic Imaging, as well as more specialised techniques for dynamic studies of specific body functions. The importance of electronic medical image transmission through the cloud and cybersecurity will also be covered in this module. |

Biomaterials | The course aims to provide students with a general understanding of a wide range of biomaterials made from appropriate metals, ceramics, and polymers (including natural and synthetic polymers). Included in the course are relevant fundamental details that link factors such as bonding, structure, processing parameters and microstructures to the properties of biomaterials. These fundamentals will equip students to understand the mechanical, chemical and physical behaviour of materials when used in biomedical applications. |
Biomedical Device | Students will be introduced to the wide range of biomedical devices such as cardiac devices (including heart valves, stents, pacemakers, catheters, etc), dental implants, ophthalmological devices, drug delivery techniques, auditory devices, and diagnostic tools. Students will also learn about sterilisation, evaluation and failure analysis of implants and medical devices. |
Human Factors and Systems Design | This module is about understanding human strengths and limitations as well as designing systems that fit them. It gives students an overview of the underlying philosophy, aims and approaches of human-centred system design. Students are introduced to the human sensory and physiological systems and cognitive processes. They are exposed to basic principles of designing and evaluating workplaces and interfaces. Issues on accidents, human error and safety design are also covered in this course. |
Entry requirements
Applicants should possess a relevant (Engineering or Sciences) local polytechnic Diploma, ITE Technical Diploma / Technical Engineer Diploma / Work-Study Technical Diploma or Degree.
Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least five years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or an entrance test. The polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
Conditional Offer
Graduating students (in their final semester) from a local polytechnic or Institute of Technical Education (ITE) may apply for the programme.
