About course
Course description
Sustainable food production systems play an important role in supporting food resilience and the efficient use of natural resources. One such system is aquaponics, an integrated approach that combines aquaculture and hydroponics. In an aquaponics system, waste excreted by fish is converted by microorganisms into nutrients for plants, enabling the sustainable cultivation of both crops and aquatic animals within a natural ecosystem.
This two-day course is jointly conducted by Republic Polytechnic and V-Plus Agritech. It will provide you with a holistic overview of agriculture, aquaculture, and aquaponics practices to help you appreciate the distinctiveness of each system. Furthermore, the course discusses the essential conditions needed for aquaculture and aquaponics systems to function optimally. Various hands-on activities will be included as part of the course to enhance learning. There will also be site visits to a greenhouse, fish research centre, and an aquaponics farm to help you understand how the various concepts taught are applied in the industry.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
1. Understand the essential elements and conditions required for the growth of plants and fishes in aquaponic systems
2. Apply appropriate aquaponic knowledge and skills to farm plants and fishes
3. Manage and maintain simple aquaponic systems
Target audiences
