A Mother's Love, A Daughter's Inspiration

Inspired by her mother, her strongest pillar, and driven by the desire to set a positive example for her daughter, Izzah made the decision to return to school.

“‘Too late’ is a myth. Time will pass anyway. Would you rather spend it moving towards a goal, or standing still?” asks Nur Izzah Tan, recipient of the SkillsFuture Lifelong Learning Award and a graduate of the Part-Time Diploma in Applied Science (Pharmaceutical Sciences).

From playing pretend with a toy stethoscope and “prescribing” Tic Tacs as medicine to flipping through hardcover books on anatomy, herbology, and home remedies, Izzah’s love for science began when she was young. One treasured book, Guide to Medical Cures & Treatments, still sits by her side today, a quiet reminder that her calling has always been there.

That childhood curiosity eventually grew into something more purposeful.

Inspired by her mother, her strongest pillar, and driven by the desire to set a positive example for her daughter, Izzah made the decision to return to school. Balancing work, family, and limited time was not easy, but she stayed committed. Along the way, it was the quiet gestures that kept her going: handwritten notes from her daughter, and her husband making sure she travelled safely to and from school.

A turning point came when her mother suffered a stroke. It strengthened her resolve to build a more stable and meaningful future in healthcare.

Her perseverance and commitment to growth have not gone unnoticed. Izzah was awarded the SkillsFuture Lifelong Learning Award in recognition of her resilience and dedication despite life’s many demands.

Today, she is putting her learning into practice as a clinic assistant, empowering patients through clear communication and education. What truly sets her apart, though, is her determination to keep going.

Looking ahead, Izzah has taken another bold step by pursuing a second Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science). More than just an extension of her studies, it is a deliberate move to deepen her expertise, bridge knowledge gaps, and move closer to her long-term aspirations in science and healthcare.
