Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Cybersecurity: Mapel Yap Named Finalist for President’s Award for Teachers 2023
1 September 2023
For Mapel Yap, cybersecurity is more than a fast-growing industry. It is a space where more women should feel empowered to lead, innovate, and make an impact. As Assistant Programme Chair from RP’s School of Infocomm and a finalist for the President’s Award for Teachers 2023, she is committed to inspiring the next generation of women in tech through mentorship, education, and meaningful industry connections.

Who says tech is just for the boys? For Mapel Yap, breaking stereotypes and empowering young women in cybersecurity has become an important part of her journey as an educator.
Teaching was always something she felt called to do. When she discovered an opportunity to teach cybersecurity at RP, she seized it with the hope of shaping the future of Singapore’s cybersecurity landscape by mentoring and guiding young people.
Over the years, Mapel’s passion for education has grown beyond the classroom. Determined to challenge the perception that technology is an exclusively male-dominated field, she started the Girls-in-Cyber Interest Group at RP to help female students deepen their knowledge and confidence in cybersecurity.
To further support and inspire her students, Mapel also initiated collaborations with the Ladies-in-Cyber Charter, a network of female cybersecurity professionals and volunteers from the Association of Information Security Professionals.
Through seminars and sharing sessions, students hear firsthand from accomplished women in the industry about their experiences, challenges, and successes. These conversations help female students see that they too can thrive and become leaders in the tech space.
Mapel’s recognition as a finalist for the President’s Award for Teachers 2023 reflects her dedication to nurturing future-ready learners while creating a more inclusive and empowering environment for women in technology.
