Tan Ai Chin, Assistant Director at RP School of Sports and Health, appeared on Channel 8's Hello Singapore to share three essential reminders for anyone planning a trek or expedition in challenging outdoor environments.

High-altitude treks, volcano hikes and off-the-beaten-path adventures are growing in popularity, with more people embracing the outdoors to disconnect and recharge.
But the difference between a rewarding expedition and a dangerous situation often comes down to one thing: preparation. Natural environments are always changing, and informed decision-making matters as much as physical fitness.
Tan Ai Chin, Assistant Director at RP School of Sports and Health, recently shared her expertise on outdoor safety on Channel 8's Hello Singapore. Drawing on her experience in outdoor education, she offered three essential reminders for anyone planning their next adventure.
Use local expertise: research the terrain and hire experienced, certified local guides who understand changing weather conditions, trail hazards and safety protocols.
Build your endurance: Prepare for both the ascent and descent. Stair climbing or training hikes with a 10-20 kg backpack can help build the stamina you'll need for demanding terrain.
Prioritise safety: reaching the summit is never worth risking your safety. Know your limits and make sound decisions. That's what a responsible outdoor adventurer does.
At RP, we believe outdoor education is about more than adventure. It's about equipping people with the knowledge, judgement and confidence to explore the outdoors safely and responsibly.
