Researchers and students at RP School of Applied Science are developing eco-friendly flowerpots made from discarded orange peels, designed to decompose naturally in soil and release nutrients that support plant growth.

Researchers and students at RP are exploring new ways to give food waste a second life through the development of biodegradable flowerpots made from discarded orange peels.
Designed to be planted directly into soil, the eco-friendly pots naturally decompose over time, releasing nutrients that support plant growth while reducing waste. The initiative forms part of RP's broader efforts to advance circular economy solutions and sustainable materials research.
Beyond orange peels, the team is also studying the potential of other agricultural by-products such as coffee grounds, tea leaves and sugarcane bagasse, demonstrating how everyday waste can be transformed into products with real environmental value.
Through innovation and research, RP continues to champion practical solutions that support a low-waste and resource-efficient future.
