Zafirah Iskandar's experience accompanying a family member through medical treatments sparked her passion for biomedical science, leading her from competitive swimming success at RP to life sciences studies at NUS.

For School of Applied Science (SAS) graduate Zafirah Iskandar, a family member's illness became the catalyst for her career in biomedical science.
"When a family member of mine fell ill, I would often accompany him to medical appointments and witness how biomedical research and diagnostic technology play a crucial role in his recovery," shares Zafirah. "I have always yearned to give back to others, and this made me realise how science can improve lives."
This experience inspired the Methodist Girls' School alumna to enrol in the Diploma in Biomedical Science. She chose RP for its problem-based learning approach, which resonated with her learning style.
"The combination of small group learning with the guidance of supportive lecturers gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone, make mistakes, and grow from them," she explains.
Beyond academics, Zafirah made her mark both in student leadership and sports. She held an EXCO position as publicity in charge of RP Maven and was a competitive swimmer with RP Aquatics, where she clinched gold medals at both POL-ITE and Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games. Her outstanding achievements earned her the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year Award.
"Taking that leap to assume a leadership role was a defining moment," she reflects. "I went from a naive teenager who entered RP with no clear direction to someone capable of teaching, leading, and inspiring others."
Zafirah is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Life Sciences at the National University of Singapore, aspiring to become a researcher in public health. She hopes to contribute to discoveries that make healthcare more inclusive and equitable.
Her advice to incoming students? "Trust the process. You won't have it all figured out, and that's okay. Step out of your comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and believe in your growth."
