Empowering Women in Tech: The Impact of Mapel Yap

Mapel Yap, a dedicated cybersecurity lecturer, combines years of industry experience with a deep passion for teaching. She goes beyond the classroom, mentoring students to ensure they are ready to thrive in the fast-evolving tech industry.
To empower female students, Mapel founded the Girls-in-Cyber Interest Group at RP, encouraging women to explore and pursue careers in cybersecurity. This initiative provides a supportive space where students can build their knowledge and confidence in a male-dominated field.
Mapel’s impact has been recognized with her nomination as a finalist for the President’s Award for Teachers 2023, a testament to her commitment to student success and making a difference in the tech world.
Priya Boopathi: Making a Difference Through Community Engagement

Boopathi Priyanka (Priya) discovered the power of small gestures through Kids Anew, a project supporting children and youth with incarcerated parents. As the project lead, Priya witnessed how simple acts of kindness helped the children grow in confidence and form meaningful friendships. “Seeing them open up and connect with others showed me how even small efforts can make a real difference,” she shares.
Leading the project gave Priya the confidence to take on more responsibility. “I wanted to make sure our teamwork and communication helped us maximise the budget and plan activities that aligned with our goals,” explains the Diploma in Information Technology student.
Priya’s leadership journey began with the Youth Corps Leadership Programme (YCLP), where she realised her potential to create meaningful impact. Recognised for her efforts, she was one of three youths invited to speak at the Youth Corps Leaders Commencement Ceremony. Priya plans to pursue a degree in ICT or Business Analytics and remain active in Youth Corps, continuing her passion for community work.
Ho Zhi Hao: From Struggles to Success in Cybersecurity

After struggling in Junior College, Ho Zhi Hao decided to follow his passion for cybersecurity by enrolling in RP’s Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (now Diploma in Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics). “RP’s problem-based learning approach built my confidence and communication skills, preparing me for the challenges ahead,” he shares.
Zhi Hao’s journey at RP was marked by growth and opportunity. He represented RP at WorldSkills Singapore 2023 in the Cyber Security skill area and gained valuable experience through internships at A*STAR’s Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre and Trend Micro. These experiences strengthened his technical expertise and prepared him for a future as an ethical hacker.
Currently serving his National Service (NS), Zhi Hao is working towards his Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification. He also remains passionate about giving back, having received the AiSP Student Volunteer Recognition Programme Gold Award for his efforts in teaching the community about cybersecurity. Zhi Hao plans to pursue a degree in Computer Science, majoring in Cybersecurity, at NTU or NUS.
