Formulation and Nutrition Science Technology Centre (FANSTC)
Since 2008, the FANSTC has collaborated with companies across the biomedical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, animal feed, and food and flavour industries. Our expertise lies in developing formulations and technologies that are practical, scalable, and ready for industry adoption.

Our research focus
Pharmaceutical and functional food formulations

At the RP–BASF Joint Lab, we support pharmaceutical R&D in tableting, granulation, spheronisation, spray drying, tablet coating, and micro-emulsion characterisation. Our facilities include specialised equipment such as an 8-station tablet press, zetasizer, fluid bed dryer, and microfluidics system.
We also work closely with the animal health and nutrition industries to develop cost-effective and nutritionally optimised feeds.
Healthier food formulations
Our food scientists develop innovative recipes using functional ingredients to improve both health benefits and taste. These prototypes undergo scientific testing for texture, nutrition, sensory attributes, and shelf life.
By mid-2021, our new Food Innovation & Analysis Lab will further expand our capabilities in plant-based and alternative protein R&D. The lab will include equipment such as a retort, spray dryer, UHT line, extruder, and blast freezer—enabling end-to-end development of future food products.
We are also seeking commercialisation partners for promising research outputs such as nutrient-dense soy cheese and antioxidant-rich pandan leaf extract formulations.
Alternative proteins for food and feed
In our aquaculture research lab, Aquaria, we develop economical, nutritious feed formulations using alternative protein sources. These are tested in small-scale trials to evaluate fish growth and palatability.
Our team also explores non-meat-based proteins to address global food security and sustainability challenges.
Molecular diagnostics, bioprinting, and bioassays
Our cell culture labs support research on cell-based assays to evaluate the efficacy and safety of bioactive compounds. Studies include cytotoxicity, regenerative potential, and stem cell differentiation using advanced tools such as FACS and 3D bioprinting.
We welcome partnerships to commercialise our patented single-step PCR method for detecting infectious diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.
Health technology innovation
We’re exploring low-cost, point-of-care health solutions that support early detection and self-monitoring. Current projects include uroflow-based renal disease detection and cognitive performance analysis using EEG technology.
Combating diabetes
FANSTC collaborates with food manufacturers, hospitals, and restaurants to co-develop functional foods that help regulate blood sugar. Our team is also screening compounds that enhance insulin sensitivity—laying the groundwork for future dietary or pharmaceutical interventions to manage metabolic health.
Projects and innovations
Ecoshine: Natural Larvicide

In partnership with a local SME, we developed Ecoshine, a plant-based larvicide that targets Aedes mosquito larvae using sunlight-activated compounds. It is effective yet environmentally friendly, offering a new tool to combat mosquito-borne diseases.
Photoactive Antimicrobial Agents
Our researchers are formulating natural and semi-synthetic antimicrobial agents for applications such as surface coatings, in collaboration with a local SME.
Bioprinting Therapeutic Cells

Using a microvalve-assisted bioprinter (MAB), we’re printing therapeutic cells for safety testing in cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals. Our in-vitro system includes skin and liver organoids for systemic toxicity assessments.
Breast Cancer Marker Discovery

We are developing non-invasive diagnostic markers for early breast cancer detection, aiming to improve outcomes through earlier and more accurate prognosis.
Soy-based Granola Bars

Developed for Mr Bean, this nutrient-rich snack combines soy, oats, and nuts for a convenient and high-fibre option.
Gluten-free Blueberry Cupcakes

Made with soy pulp by-product, these cupcakes offer a healthier snack alternative for those managing sugar, fat, or gluten intake.
Ready-to-Eat Bento Meals
In collaboration with QQ Rice, we developed vending-ready bento meals. This project enables safe, convenient delivery of healthier meals and supports new revenue channels for food businesses.
Instant Herbal Teas

Working with Polimedical Pte Ltd, we’re converting six herbal tea blends into shelf-stable powdered mixes—preserving traditional benefits while meeting modern demands.
