The Part-Time Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics) aims to provide participants with a strong foundation in mechatronics, equipping them with competencies in mechanical engineering, electronics, control and automation, and software technology.
Through practical, industry-focused learning, you will:
Build a strong foundation in mechatronics, covering mechanical engineering, electronics, control and automation, and software technology
Design, develop, implement and optimise engineering systems
Apply data analytics and data visualisation skills in engineering contexts
Gain an understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in the engineering industry.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the programme, participants will be able to:
Apply the knowledge and skills of engineering disciplines to meet the multifaceted challenges of modern engineering systems.
Utilise technical expertise and skills in Industry 4.0, technology and sustainability skills to take on roles in emerging areas such as additive manufacturing and robotics, AI and digitalisation.
Apply technical knowledge and skills in interfacing robotic systems, mobility systems, automation systems, machine vision and applied AI in environments, such as advanced manufacturing and logistics warehouse operations.
Apply Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity essentials to bolster OT cybersecurity and develop strategies for effective monitoring and control of critical processes.
Leverage the strong foundation in mechatronics engineering, and self-directed learning skills to consistently upgrade competencies to keep up with the advancement in technology.
Course structure
You will be awarded the Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics) upon successful completion of the 5 Module Certificates (MCs).
The Diploma in Engineering (Mechatronics) will be issued upon meeting 50% of attendance requirements and passing all coursework and assessment.

Digital Electronics | This module equips participants with knowledge of digital electronics by exploring the basic building blocks of combinational digital electronic circuits. Participants will learn number systems, basic logic gates, Boolean algebra, design techniques for combinational logic circuits, decoders, encoders, multiplexers and de-multiplexers and integrated circuit logic families such as TTL and CMOS. Participants will also learn the characteristics of basic latches and flip-flops and their use in combination with sequential circuit operation. |
Sensor Systems | This module equips students with a comprehensive understanding of sensors commonly employed in industrial and consumer settings. Students will gain proficiency in interfacing diverse sensor modules with microcontroller boards and Single Board Computers. |
Automation Systems | This module equips students with knowledge and practical skills in instrumentation, automation and control. Students will be trained in electrical safety, automation system design, fieldbus technology, distributed control system, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), motorised actuators and pneumatic systems. The topics covered in this module include electrical safety, properties of various electrical components in automation systems, pneumatic systems and actuators, motorised systems, PLC Programming, Fieldbus technology, Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) for Process Control (PC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems design. There will be hands-on laboratory sessions for students to hone their practical skills in instrumentation, automation and control system design. These knowledge and skills will prepare them to be ready for work in the transportation, manufacturing, process and automation industries. |

Data Visualisation and Analysis for Engineering | This module covers the data analytics lifecycle, including cleaning, processing, and visualising data. Students will learn to perform exploratory data analysis, develop a visual dashboard using a visualisation tool and present insights through a data storytelling approach. |
Programming for Engineering | This introductory module aims to equip students with the ability and confidence to build applications using Python and its several widely used libraries. Students will acquire the competencies to incorporate programming components such as variables, input and output statements, functions, loops, and decision-making structures into their applications. Students will also perform descriptive data analysis on datasets using suitable libraries. |
Computer-Aided Design | Computer-aided Design (CAD) is a popular tool in the engineering design, analysis and manufacturing process. In this module, students will learn and apply the fundamentals of 3D CAD modelling techniques, simulating assembly and 2D engineering drawing for mechatronics related systems. Students are also required to analyse engineering data, form fit and layout of their design and present their design in either 3D or 2D snap shots. Students would also be exposed to prototyping methods for development of solutions in mechatronics related systems that can be easily done through a computer-aided design. |

Principles of Electrical and Electronic Engineering | This module equips students with the necessary foundation for electrical circuit analysis. Students will learn to apply techniques in analysing basic elements (resistors, capacitors and inductors) with Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) power sources. Students will also learn concepts of electromagnetism and its application in power generation, transformer and motor operation. |
Principles of Mechanics | This module exposes students to the basic concepts of statics, strength of materials, dynamics, and fundamentals of mechanics. It will enable them to analyse and solve mechanics-related problems with the knowledge acquired. The key topics that will be covered in this module are Units and Vectors, Forces and Moments, Static Equilibrium, Free Body Diagrams, Centroids, Mechanical Stress and Strain, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Momentum, Conservation of Energy, Friction and Applications, Work-Energy Interaction, Linear Motion, Angular Motion, Mechanical Oscillations, and Simple Pendulum Oscillations. |
Engineering Materials | This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of engineering materials. They will be equipped with a robust understanding of the characteristics, behaviours and processing techniques of different engineering materials used in real-world engineering contexts. In addition, they will learn topics covering the properties and applications of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, composites and non-metallic materials. Students will also gain insights into material degradation such as corrosion and fatigue, and the methodologies employed in failure investigation. This will enable them to explore diverse treatment processes and manufacturing methods applicable to these materials. |

It will cover the theory and application process of AI methods, machine learning and deep learning techniques, and AI ethics. Commonly used machine learning algorithms and deep learning models will be introduced to students, along with engineering use cases. Students will build their understanding of AI methods and tools using AI models in engineering systems. The evolution and the latest development of AI will also be introduced to support students to further explore this field. |
Mechatronic Systems and Design | This module introduces how microcontroller, electronics, and mechanics can be integrated into a reliable system. Students will gain essential knowledge on integrating the sensors, actuators, and displays for programming a microcontroller-based application. Students will also learn about programming and interface sensors and gain motor control of the automation processes. |
