This module introduces students to an overview of the legal system in Singapore and explores the intricate intersection of ethical theories and principles used in Singapore’s healthcare system that serves as a foundation for ethical and legal decision making. Students will explore common ethical and legal issues faced in healthcare such a, consent, confidentiality, decision making capacity, and end of life issues (e.g., Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and Advanced Medical Directives (AMD). Students will also learn about the statutes and laws that are relevant to the healthcare industry. With knowledge gained, students will understand the complex interplay between health, ethics, and law, particularly when it comes to protecting the rights and dignity of older adults.
