UACOI held an eventful Agrifood Research and Innovation Showcase (ARIS), themed Biowaste Management in the Agri-food Sector, at Temasek Polytechnic on 28 February 2024. The event delved into the crucial topics of addressing biowaste within the agri-food sector, offering insights and solutions from esteemed speakers and industry experts in adopting a circular approach to minimise farm wastes and value-adding to farm by-products to ensure sustainable urban agriculture.
We were honoured to have Singapore Food Agency sharing the overview of Singapore's agrifood by-products and farm wastes and approaches in waste valorisation. Additionally, Dr. Kadamb Patel, Head of CROPS at Temasek Polytechnic, enlightened us with innovative solutions to upscale farm waste. Dr. Heng Kiang Soon, a distinguished Lecturer from the School of Applied Science at Republic Polytechnic, discussed strategies for repurposing food by-products such as okara for application in urban agriculture. Furthermore, Dr. Snehasish Basu, a Senior Research Fellow from the School of Materials Science & Engineering at NTU, shared insights on postharvest shelf-life extension of fruits & leafy green vegetables to minimise farm wastage. The event provided attendees with a day of learning, exploration for collaboration and networking as we tackled the challenges of biowaste management together. We are grateful for the participation of all attendees and look forward to their continued engagement as we shape the future of sustainable urban agriculture at our upcoming ARIS events throughout 2024!
