Sustainable Mushroom Cultivation 101

This two-day course is an introduction to hands-on approach of growing gourmet mushrooms in an eco-friendly way. It is aimed at developing the participant towards a proficient mushroom farmer, ensuring quality and ease of work. The training program covers the preparation stage to the harvesting stage of mushroom production.

Participants will learn about each essential steps required for indoor mushroom cultivation which include inoculum and growing media selection/ preparation, grain spawn generation, inoculation of growing media and monitoring and managing all growth phases of mycelia to bring it to matured fruit bodies. Optimum environmental conditions and growth parameters will be discussed along with methods to mitigate contamination. Post harvesting management of spent compost will be briefly introduced. The operation and maintenance of low-tech and high-tech cultivation methods will also be covered. Participants will get a chance to explore Republic Polytechnic's facilities for Aseptic Cell Culture and Controlled Environment Agriculture. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • collect mushroom spores and conduct tissue culture using fresh mushrooms
  • generate grain spawn
  • inoculate growing media for fruit body formation

Hobbyists and adult learners interested to pursue careers in agriculture.

Certification

Participants will be awarded a certificate of completion upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.

For courses with formal assessment component, participants will be awarded the certification of completion upon passing the assessment. Otherwise, a certification of attendance will be issued instead upon meeting the 75% course attendance requirement.
