This module builds upon foundational chemistry modules which introduce students to concepts of medicinal chemistry that are relevant for the understanding of pharmacological activities and pharmacokinetics of drug molecules. Students will gain knowledge on the chemistry of drugs and drug systems, focusing on heterocyclic chemistry and the major drug classes. Principles of drug design, with an emphasis on the relationship between structure, physicochemical properties and the molecular basis of drug action will also be taught. In addition, students will acquire practical laboratory skills in their study of the synthesis, characterisation, identification and chemical optimisation of drug molecules. Topics covered include the role of chemistry in the drug discovery process, selection and screening techniques and design of compound libraries.
