Microbial and cellular sciences are essential in various industries like food, biopharmaceuticals, and agriculture. This module provides students with insights on how microorganisms and cells are used in life science research. Essential laboratory skills such as microbial identification and mammalian cell culture techniques form a core part of the curriculum. The module also covers the application of microbial analysis in food and health sectors, including methods for shelf-life testing of food products and pathogen detection. Furthermore, students explore the role of microorganisms and cells in processes like fermentation, the production of bioactive compounds and enzymes. An integral component of the module is training in basic food hygiene, culminating in a national Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) Food Safety Level 1 certification. Utilising laboratory and case-based learning, the curriculum aims to equip students with the skills in tackling real-world challenges in food safety, quality, nutrition, and health.
