This module aims to provide concepts in the structure, properties and reactions of inorganic compounds (metals and organometallic compounds) and organic compounds (carbon containing compounds). Topics covered in organic chemistry include the structure, IUPAC nomenclature and functional groups of organic compounds (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, ketones, esters), isomers of organic compounds, basic principles of organic reaction and reaction mechanisms such as free radical substitution, electrophilic addition and nucleophilic substitution. Students will get to learn inorganic chemistry topics such as the properties of main group metals, non-metals and transition metals, and coordination chemistry. Students would gain competence in basic laboratory techniques through practical sessions such as design and planning of experiment, neutralization, displacement, precipitation and complex ion formation.
