This module builds on the concept of genes as the unit of heredity in organisms. Students will learn Mendelian inheritance, breeding and genetic crosses. The mechanisms behind genetic transmission as well as variation between organisms within a population will be taught. Students will then go on to learn about how genetic resources can be used to enhance aquaculture production through selective breeding, marker-assisted selection (MAS), and genetic modification (GM) to achieve desired traits in livestock including fish, shellfish, and algae. Additionally, they will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on skills in the techniques used to analyse genetic and genomic information. Advances and new developments in the areas of Marker Assisted Selection, Genetic modification, and analytical techniques will also be covered in this module.
